Valerian is a widely used herbal sedative and strong calmative. It has been likened to benzodiazepines for its effect on relaxing the nervous system. Unlike pharmaceutical medicines, the side effects are minimal. Valerian is known as a remedy for insomnia and can assist with getting to sleep and staying asleep. It is also used to assist with withdrawal symptoms from addictive substances. It does have a strong, earthy scent, which is often likened to smelly feet. Some people do not mind the earthy aroma in tea, but for those who cannot stand the strong smell, it is best to use it in capsule form.
